Get Qualified!

Now that ARC are offering Housing NVQs alongside the Health & Social Care (HSC) Awards, Who is going to want to do them?

I’m told there are many Housing Associations out there who have resisted putting their staff through the HSC awards, as they don’t meet their needs.
The Housing NVQs do meet their needs, so why have so few people been taking up the Award?
Answer Funding!

It seems that for some reason there is funding available for anyone who would like an NVQ in De-Commissioning Nuclear Power Stations, but not for something like a Housing NVQ!
Can someone please tell me how many people will be taking up that offer, and more to the point, why?

Whilst I have every respect for the NVQ system, I think I’d feel safer if such a thing as a Nuclear Reactor was being de-commissioned by someone with a Higher Level Qualification!
At least an HND!

Can someone also explain to me why the Housing NVQs are not included on the compact in the first place?
Level II is on the ‘repeater’ list, but why only Level II?
Most support staff in Housing Associations and similar, often work independently, and so require a Level III at least.
Yes, I know an NVQ isn’t a legislative requirement for these workers, yet.
It is coming though, and my advice would be to get in now and enrol on a Housing NVQ, before the big change, as who knows what will be sitting on the QCF when it comes (allegedly) into force in 2010?

I’m looking into the possibility of ARC delivering Cleaning NVQs at Level II and III.
They attract priority funding, and as there are thousands of cleaners employed in homes and services across the UK, there should be many of ARC’s members keen to access this award.
Am I right? Is there a need for ARC to deliver this award?

I’m off now to answer some emails, I’m looking forward to a few answers, so come on, let’s be hearing from you. As Arnie said, “I’ll be back”……

Regards Tony

  1. Well, its great to see ARC embracing new ways of working & how good to be able to update people & share info through a blog!

I think funding is a big issue, who can not be tempted by the word 'FREE' ? However, alot of organisations have had their fingers severly burnt by some NVQ providers offering 'Free' NVQs,& unfortunately in so many cases of late it seems these centres have taken organisations money along with train to gain & LSC monies, got greedy, have not been able to come up with the goods & gone bust! ( I also heard from one EV last week, she had closed down a centre who was fraudulently signing off units & claiming funding, when the NVQs were incomplete!)

It has been really satisfying to be able to support orgaisations & learners in my area
(East Anglia) to 'come back' to ARC & complete their award!

The EVs are asking us to tell them of any 'poor practice' we see in other centres, as it devalues the award..so come on, lets here about them, so we can ensure that NVQs keep their 'good' name!

  2. Glad to see you onboard with the changes and improvements Sara. I'm hoping you are the first of many to give ARC and the consortium feedback, positive and negative! I'm the first to admit that we have got things wrong in the past, and no doubt we will, on occasion, make mistakes again. The difference now is that there are many more checks and balances in place to ensure mistakes are picked up and rectified. They won't go unnoticed for months on end! The new database is helping enormously. As will ideas and innovations from our members and staff team, such as this blog!
